BIDING TIME
While waiting for a table at the Olive Garden restaurant. Amy admires the elegant dresses of some high school girls - must have been homecoming weekend or something.
AMY: "I'm tired of feeling so fat."
ME: "You're not fat. You're pregnant."
AMY: "When I get thin again, I'm going to start wearing mini-skirts."
ME: "NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT."
(Stares from other waiting patrons.)
AMY: "I never did before because I took my figure for granted."
ME: "Flaunt it while you still got it. That's what I've been telling you, baby. Because you don't want to be flaunting anything after you've lost it."
AMY: "That's for sure."
Amy has a theory about why some older women tend to wear more and more jewelry as they get older. They use the jewelry not just for status or to enhance their features but to disguise or even distract from their fading beauty, much like makeup. Amy has admitted that she can almost see herself doing this someday. I think having Sun Su has made her think more about the future.
In the car ride home.
AMY: "It seems like we have a long time, but it's really pretty short."
ME: "Yep."
AMY: "I'll probably live till I'm ninety. You ... maybe eighty."
ME: "... ? ... I guess."
AMY: "That's why I want to go to church. I want to go to heaven. I don't want to know I'm dead and not end up in heaven."
ME: "How are you going to know you're dead when you're dead. You won't know anything, you'll be d--"
AMY: "I believe in heaven, but I want to believe in it more. Maybe I'll ask the mohksanim (pastor) about it."
ME: "You sure that's a good idea? He'll probably tell us we have to start praying at home with Sun Su before dinner, and to come to sermon on time, and not just for the breakfast."
AMY: "He's not like that. He'll probably just tell me what I want to hear."
ME: "Yeah, but there's still no way I'm going to any nine o'clock sermons." (Unless they start serving food at nine o'clock maybe.)
ME: "Are those new earrings?"
AMY: "Yeah, I just got them."
ME: "They're bigger than your usual style."
I've only bought jewelry for Amy once by myself. They were these sparkly spiral-shaped gold/purple bauble earrings. I'm not sure how I picked them. Maybe it seemed like something you'd wear in a club, since that's where Amy was every week back then. I hadn't quite figured out her elegant simple jewelry style back then and she asked me never to buy jewelry for her again after that, unless she was with me. This has made my life so much simpler that it should have been in our marriage vows.
Amy rarely buys jewelry - no time and no occasion to wear it, she says, despite me encouraging her. But I've been noticing the very rare piece of jewelry that Amy does get seems to be getting a little bolder than it used to be.
ME: "Someday you'll be wearing ear rings like the ones I got you when we started going out."
AMY: "Eighties style, puh-leeze."
ME: "The eighties are coming back. You can set the trend."
AMY: "Psshh. Yeah, right. Maybe."
We'll just have to wait and see.
(Yeah, my nieces are cute and all, but why do girls always bug you when you're in the middle of
watching the chase scene in Ronin or something?)________________________________________

Stephen drew this picture of me since he noticed I never draw pictures of myself. The likeness is excellent and very recognizable. And it just feels like me.
Drawing portraits is a true pain in the ass, I can tell you. Stephen definitely earns my deepest respect, although I would encourage him to choose more attractive models in the future.
