FIRST DRAWING OF AMY
There's
Like the title says, this was the first drawing I ever did of my wife Amy. It's the drawing I did of her after we had broken up and the one that caused a fight between her and her then boyfriend. All's fair in love and war, at least when it comes to soul mates perhaps. Probably the most important part of the drawing was a "heart" in the table design border that was cropped out due to the picture's size in this scan (it would have been on the far right, next to the swirly designs). Amy didn't notice it, but her boyfriend at the time did, and had told her,
"Who spends this much time drawing someone like this? Look at this heart. This jerk is in love with you."
Guys always know what guys are thinking. Amy didn't even notice it.
In the end, Amy left him not because of a silly drawing, but because he was "too casual" about their relationship, in her words. She wanted someone who she felt really loved her, and I was pretty obvious.
(The full story of how we met is here: Part 1, and Part 2 in the following entry.)
I did this one in 1993.
The details in the drawing, like all of my drawings, are significant. The suit was more of a reflection of Amy's attitude then. The glass of ice water was always nearby in those days I'd meet her at her family's cafe (University Cafe at University of Michigan, new owners since then). The small painting of the child was from a grade school picture of Amy. The figurine on the table is in Corean Goguryoh armor. The flowers were from the time I randomly picked flowers out of other people's yards on my way to Amy's apartment one day. I had a fast bike then.
The tiger in the background is from an actual Corean painting. At the time (1993), I didn't realize the prominence that tigers had in Corean legend. I just thought it suited Amy quite well.
